Carbon footprint

Carbon footprint or CO2 footprint is a way of expressing the emissions of CO2 due to the use of fossil fuels in traffic situations.

Sustainability plays an important role in Van den Anker’s policy. Registering and, subsequently, limiting the environmental impact have been a fixed part of its business strategy for many years. Monitoring and reducing emissions are important goals within this context.

It has now been generally accepted that the emission of greenhouse gasses contributes to climate change and that the emission of air-polluting substances such as fine dust and nitrogen dioxides have significant negative effects on health and people.

Van den Anker applies a difference between warehousing and transport in its approach. It also tries to calculate back the CO2 load to a cost centre. For transport this refers to a shipment and for warehousing this is a pallet location.

Van den Anker's objective is to reduce the CO2 emissions to more than 30% in 5 years time. The reduction will be compared with the point of reference the year 2007.

The results of Van den Anker’s policy can be seen in the above figures. The continuous improvements can best be summarised as:

  • Innovative improvements: such as applying the hub and spoke model and navigation systems
  • Technological improvements: always using the best possible technologies and modes of transport
  • Operational improvements: kaizen strategy, maximum capacity utilisation and automatic planning
  • Improvements in conduct: driving style training and supervision
